apparently i had one highly infected tooth which they just pulled out and i took codeine because the numbing wore out but IT ISNT WORKING TO WEEL the dentist said that since it was the bottom its going to hurt and hurt a lot but my top ones don't have to come out yet, which is good. I still have to go into work tomorrow *cries* but really, thats okay. work in codeine. yay.

Plus side is I watched TV the whole time about Russian scientist being held in camps so they would make some nice pretty planes for WW2 and slashy whore that I am, I want me a SGA ww2 fic with my scientist all locked up under key and someone watching them. Really? i dont care who it is. It was what got me through my day.

Also? Im a horrible creature and never got around to pimping this *slaps self*

They didn't prescribe antibiotics first? I'm kind of weirded out by that.

And hoping that you feel better soon. Stupid wisdom teeth.

Actually, really weirded out by that, since it's always the first thing I've seen done when a patient presents with swelling. I've always been told that anaesthetics aren't as potent in infected sites, so it's always best to treat that first even if you know it's going to be extracted later on. (It's also why root canals are way less painful now, because you're actually frozen which wasn't always the case.)

So, a little bit of quick internet research....

Some dentists will give a patient an antibiotic and send them home for several days to allow the infection to clear before attempting the extraction. The reason for this is because the local anesthesia does not work as well in acid environments and it may take a lot of shots to get the patient numb. However, if the dentist gives enough anesthesia, it is possible to extract a tooth under such circumstances. In general, I have never found that extraction of a tooth in the presence of an active infection has presented special problems as long as the patient takes the antibiotics prescribed faithfully.

(We usually see the patient the next day if we can.)

And, aha! News from the local University:
Generally, no. Surgery in the presence of infection can cause infection to spread and become more serious. Firstly, the infection must be controlled by local oral hygiene, antibiotics and sometimes the extraction of the opposing wisdom tooth.

And from a site that doesn't really look like it's from any sort of reputable source, but I'm quoting it anyway, so I can pretend I've won best two out of three and can go to bed :)
If during the examination a significant level of active infection is found to be present (primarily evidenced by swelling) your dentist may decide that you need to take an antibiotic for several days before the tooth extraction procedure is performed. Doing so will make complications, both during the extraction procedure and during the subsequent healing process, less likely to occur.

But, I can safely say that the antibiotics are just as important for pain control as the codeine, and might even help more.

Mmm, also, if he prescribed Tylenol threes (or twos or ones or whatever) I often mix them with advil for that extra pain-free kick.

He gave me a nice shot in the gems to clear up the infection. Which is what im assuming is something to clear it up. She did ask the whole time that f I fetl any pain, he woudl give me another shot. Which he had to do. I had two shots to start, the short term ones for extraction and then laer when he started (after cutting the skin and drilling) pulling, two more. they where to last longer (up to 6 hours) to help. I dont know though, you gave me quit a few link sand now im a bit worried. i will have to see though.

but thank you so much for that info.

Don't be worried! I'm sorry! It sounds like, while most dentists prefer to do it another way, this is still an acceptable way of doing it as long as you take your antibiotics :)
